About This Item

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1953. Limited Edition: #648/2000. Softcover. Octavos, Two Volumes. In Very Good condition. Bound in light brown paper wraps with black lettering to spine. Mild rubbing and wear, primarily to corners and spines. Text block lightly age toned with very slight bumping to lower fore edge corners. First edition in English, preceded by the French text.

Vol. I. (342, [3] pages) (Limited edition, #648/2000. Inscribed to William 'Bill' Targ by Henry Miller on the title page) - Vol. II. (348, [1] pages) (Out of series.). Shelved in Case 2. The second part in Miller's trilogy The Rosy Crucifixion continues the lightly fictionalized account of the six-year period of Henry Miller's life in Brooklyn and Paris as he falls for his second wife June (appearing here as 'Mona') and struggles to become a writer. In response to criticism about the trilogy from his friend, Lawrence Durrell, Miller wrote: "I am trying to reproduce in words a block of my life which to me has the utmost significance - every bit of it. Since 1927 I have carried inside me the material of this book. Do you suppose it's possible that I could have a miscarriage after such a period of gestation? ... But Larry, I can never go back on what I've written. If it was not good, it was true; if it was not artistic, it was sincere; if it was in bad taste, it was on the side of life." (Brassaï, Henry Miller: The Paris Years).

William Targ (1907-1999) was an American book editor and publisher, perhaps best known for publishing Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather while editor-in-chief of G. P. Putnam's Sons. He was also authored a memoir about his time in the publishing industry, Indecent Pleasures (1975). 1309101. Shelved Dupont Bookstore.
