Description:
New York, 1830. An unsigned oil painting on canvas of the Hudson Highlands on a sunny summer's day, looking north from West Point, and based on a work by Robert W. Weir titled 'View of the Hudson Highlands from West Point'. Robert Walter Weir (1803 - 1889) was a member of the Hudson River School of Art. Elected to the National Academy of Design in 1829, he also served as professor of drawing at West Point from the 1830's to the 1870's. His better known works include 'The Embarkation of the Pilgrims (at the rotunda of the US Capitol at Washington, DC) and 'Landing of Hendrik Hudson'. The view in this oil painting, by an unknown artist, is taken from Trophy Point looking north up the Hudson, with Cold Spring buildings on the eastern shore, and "Undercliff" prominently visible above the town. Undercliff was built by John Hamilton, son of Alexander Hamilton, who originally intended to use it as a summer residence but instead sold it to the poet, Gen. George P. Morris, who used it as his summer home… Read More

Description:
London, 1917. Very good condition. The salver was presented as a wedding gift to Royal Navy officer CHARLES ROYDS (1876-1931), the Discovery's first lieutenant after whom Cape Royds in Antarctica is named. The salver has specially crafted feet, fashioned after penguin's feet. The Discovery expedition was the first led by Captain Robert Scott and was arranged by the Joint Antarctic Committee composed of members from the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society. Known as the British National Antarctic Expedition, the goal of the expedition was the scientific exploration of South Victoria Land and the ice barrier as well as the interior of the Antarctic continent. Its achievements included the discovery of the polar plateau and Scott's ascent, the first ever, in a hot air balloon over Antarctica. It was also the first to do extensive land exploration on the continent and went the furthest south by a sledge reaching 82 16' S. One of the unexpected contributions was the introduction to the… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam, 1636. In this etching, Rembrandt has depicted his wife Saskia surrounded by six other subjects of different ages. The etching is reminiscent of a sketchbook page, in which the artist practices different facial expressions and the fall of drapery on his subjects. Saskia receives the most detailed study with very fine lines used to draw her curls and a thin headdress. Each figure looks out in a different direction. Signed on the verso by the early Parisian print seller Naudet - "Chez Naudet Md au Louvre 1801". The "Md" is an abbreviation for 'Marchand", (merchant.) (See Maberley, Joseph, "The Print Collector: An Introduction to the Knowledge Necessary for Forming..." 1880, p.84 and Fagan, Louis, "Collectors' Marks", 1883, p. 73.) There are several prints held in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge with Naudet inscriptions, one being "Two boys blowing bubbles. Bartsch 365; Hollstein (White and Boon) 365. Usticke's second state (of 2), with the horizontal scratches between the head of Saskia and… Read More

Description:
1911. Very good condition. In this letter, Scott writes in great haste and some annoyance to an unidentified recipient about the inability to fulfill the recipients request to send photos of the motor sledge. It is likely to have been a request by Wolseley, the manufacturer of the motor sledge. Scott brought three of them for this push to the South Pole but they were a severe disappointment. One sank through thin ice on unloading at Cape Evans. When the final push to the Pole commenced, the two remaining motors departed on October 24th, 1911; they broke down from the horrible surfaces, overheating and mechanical problems, only 6 and 8 days out. Scott & the rest of the party departed Cape Evans on November 1st, 1911 and would only have learned about the motors' failure as they rendezvoused on November 21st. This was a disastrous beginning to the Southern Journey, as the 'Motor Party' had now become the first man-hauling team on the outward leg, and the ponies were forced to pull loads far heavier… Read More

Description:
Niagara, C. W. (Canada), 1852. Very good condition. A very rare, unrecorded, Australian gold rush broadside, advertising to Canadians outside of Toronto a ship departure to the gold rush in "Sydney" via Boston, and carrying Edward Roper, an artist who pictorialized the Australian bush. It is not recorded on WorldCat, Trove or the Canadian National Catalogue and handsomely printed in a variety of bold type fonts. In February 1851, gold was discovered at Ophir near Orange in New South Wales by Edward Hargraves. This find launched the Australian gold rushes. Most likely based on this information and the slow pace of accurate news moving about the globe, Sydney was cited as the destination for the ship Concordia. At some stage between the printing and their arrival in Australia, the destination of the ship was changed to Melbourne and the Victorian gold diggings. According to Jim Burant, who worked for Library and Archives Canada for 38 years, "Roper embarked from Boston on board the sailing ship… Read More

London: John Snow, 1850. First separate printing. Hardcover. Otherwise very good condition. Medhurst was apprenticed as a printer & typesetter, eventually engaged by the London Missionary Society. He became a Protestant missionary for the LMS and over his 37 years in Malaysia, Indonesia and China, published numerous dictionaries of various dialects. In the 1840s, he was one of four who cooperated to translate the Bible into Chinese. This book is rare in the trade, especially in the original cloth binding. This is the London issue of the title page, with the text and illustrations printed in Shanghai on Chinese paper. A catalogue note appended to the Franklin Brook Hitching copy that was sold by Sotheby's in 2015 as part 3 of his exquisite holdings. "When Shanghai port opened to British merchants in 1842 as a result of the Anglo-Chinese treaty of Nanking, Walter Medhurst (1796-1857) quickly established an outpost of the London Missionary Society and a mission press, the first such modern press in… Read More

Description:
London: W. Byrne, No. 79 Titchfield Street & J. Webber, No. 312 Oxford St., 1784. First printing. Print. Very good condition. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. Copper engraving, published as the Act Directs 1st Jan. 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street, and W. Byrne, No. 19, Titchfield Street, London. 22 3/4 x 18 1/4" image size.
