The 1884 Australian reprint of one of the seminal works of medicine, Edward Jenner's pioneering work on the creation of the smallpox vaccine, the world's first vaccine. Published in the wake of Sydney's 1881 smallpox outbreak as part of a renewed push in what was a long and unsuccessful campaign by New South Wales medical practitioners for mandatory vaccination, when by 1860, Queensland and New South Wales were the only Australian colonies not to have enacted such legislation. Reprinted from Australian physician George Bennett's copy of the Second Edition published by Sampson Low in 1800 and containing the second and third parts, while stated in the preface (likely penned by John Creed) to be "a perfect fac simile", differs from the original edition in that it… Read More

Stockholm: Bokforlags Aktiebolaget Thule, 1936. First Thus. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition. 31cm x 24cm. 27 pages, 77 plates (24 coloured). Original cloth, new leather labels, gilt lettering. Tyra Kleen (1874-1951) was a Swedish artist, ethnographic researcher, keen theosophist, cosmopolitan woman of the world, and a founding member of Foreningen Svenska Konstnarinnor (The Association of Swedish Women Artists). Kleen studied painting in Germany and France, lived and socialised with the cultural elite in Rome at the turn of the 19th century, and travelled, exhibited, and socialised extensively around the world. A fiercely independent character, despite rampant misogyny, she managed to skilfully manoeuvre and at times manipulate to achieve her ambitious goals. She spent many years throughout the 1910s and 1920s in Indonesia, studying ceremonial dance, and produced a number of books on dance, theatre, and ritual in Java and Bali, and in 1938 was awarded the Johan August Wahlberg for her work… Read More

London: R. Baldwin and Thomas Underwood, 1813. Third Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Good Condition. Inscribed by Author. 21cm x 14cm. xvi, 215 pages. Contemporary papered boards. "In which some Suggestions are offered towards an improved Mode of treating Diseases of the Mind, and Some Rules proposed which it is hoped may lead to a more Humane and successful Method of Cure: to which are subjoined, Remarks on Medical Jurisprudence, as it relates to Diseased Intellect." The third and final revised edition of the major work by English physician Joseph Mason Cox (1763-1818). Cox was one of the first medical graduates to specialise in the treatment of the insane. Throughout his career he advocated for more humane treatment of lunatics and maniacs. In this work he introduces his swinging technique, based on a design by Erasmus Darwin, of spinning a patient's body round a vertical axis in a specially designed chair which would produce nausea, vomiting, and convulsions, but would ultimately lead… Read More

Black cloth, gilt lettering, illustrated onlay, 2 clamshell folders, original shipping cartons. The first edition of the ever mysterious Codex Seraphinianus by Italian artist Luigi Serafini (1949-). Description:
London: John S. Barrington, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Very Good Condition. 31.5cm x 24cm. [64], [64] pages, black and white illustrations. Plain red boards, comb bound, plain jackets. John S. Barrington (1920-1991) was a prolific 20th century British physique photographer. Receiving a formal art training in Paris, he was also a visual artist and sculptor, and earlier in his career worked in theatre design. Barrington began picking up and photographing men at the pool, eventually going on to establish one of the most prolific physique studios of the 20th century, during which time he probably published and distributed more full male nudes than any of his contemporaries up until the changing censorship laws in the latter part of the century. Superb Youth in a Camera Life-Class is one of his scarcest works, unrecorded in public collections, and with a stated limited edition of 100 copies (though this could be Barrington's marketing at work). It combines his photography and visual… Read More
