The Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust (1983 ]. Birgit Skiöld (1923-1982) was a Swedish printmaker, heralded as one of the most important printmakers of the 20th century. From 1958 until her death in May 1982, Birgit ran the highly successful Print Workshop in the basement of 28 Charlotte Street, London. The workshop was the first open-access professional print workshop in England. After the death of the artist, 'A Tribute to Birgit Skiold' was produced to raise funds for the Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust in 1983. 118 artists from various countries contributed free of charge an edition of 25 prints in the 30 x 30 cm format, to create a portfolio of three volumes.The artists featured in this portfolio were taught by or worked with Skiöld. Contemporary Cosway style binding of full purple grained calf, the boards blocked in gilt with arabesques and corner ornaments, spine gilt in compartments and lettered direct. The upper cover with the watercolour on vellum (?) Arms of the Earl of Thanet heightened with gold within oval frame under glass . The lower cover blocked in gilt with the letter "T". Wide inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. In excellent condition. Inscribed by the author to the dedicatee of this work "To the Right Honourable the Earl of Thanet with the Authors' best respects". An uncommon work, only 4 copies cited by Copac.

George Newnes, London, 1892. First edition, first issue. Illustrations. 8vo (9 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches), 317-pages. Original blue bevelled cloth blocked in gilt and black. All edges gilt. A little mostly marginal foxing, upper inner joint cracked and held on webbing. Headband bruised, spine a little dulled, several inner gutters cracked, some light dustmarking to binding. Overall very good. Free from inscriptions. First issue points being 'Violent' for Violet on p. 317, and no name on the street sign on the upper board.

Oval mounted Woodburytype portrait frontispiece of Colonel Durnford Royal Engineers,. and one other mounted photographic plate, and two tinted lithographic plates. 8vo (9 1/4 x 6 inches), pages: xii:327:32 (publisher's catalogue dated November 1879). Recent full green morocco, spine gilt ruled and with gilt ornaments in compartments, gilt lettered direct. The cloth from the original backstrip and upper cover retained and bound-in at end. Presentation copy inscribed by Durnford's mother to "C.J. Moore-Miller from his (My Chief and I Colonel Durnford R.E.) mother E. R. Durnford Dec. 13th 1879". At Pietermaritzburg, Durnford was befriended by Bishop Colenso, and had a close relationship with the bishop's daughter Frances Ellen Colenso, the author of this volume, who also completed Durnford's work History of the Zulu War and its Origins, also published 1880. The archive contains briefly:"Account of a Journey to Ackwoprth School performed by Joseph Coles, Richrad Little-boy and John Southam in 1794 "Set out from Bucking'm about 6 o'clock in the morning and arrived at the Angel Inn, North'm about 10..." The journal describes the various towns through which they pass and the people they meet, eventually arriving in Nottingham "after a pleasant ride during which our spirits were refreshed by passing a Friend on the road who appeared to be a young man of a solid countenance. At Nottingham they stay at the Flying Horse "where we were well accommodated by the people of the house". Eventually they arrive at the New Inn, Ackworth. Manuscript on vellum, three membranes, with an initial portrait of the King and the Great Seal attached. The document overall 31 x 24 inches, the Great Seal 6 inches in diam. All contained in the original shaped leather over wood case; the case now rather worn and lacking much of the original leather covering. The Great Seal is a rather poor lumpy impression and now lacking the original tin case (skippet). The document inscribed to the reverse "The within Patent has been duly recorded in the College of Arms London pursuant to the tenor of His Majesty's Warrant under his Royal Signet and Sign Manual .......Examined therewith the thirteenth day of December 1803" and signed George Harrison, Clarenceux & Register. July 1969. A fine portrait by Cecil Beaton of the 20 year old Prince taken in the same month as his investiture. In the fine large presentation frame by Jarrolds of Knightsbridge, in green morocco with gilt Prince of Wales Feathers at the head. The photograph itself 8 x 6 inches, the frame 15 x 10 1/2 inches. The signature and date are faded although remain distinct. Beaton's stamp to the reverse. A rare image.

An extraordinary unsigned finely executed calligraphic manuscript of 214-pages, written in a small neat hand in double column, all the capital letters in red and with 170 illuminated initials in colours. Title illuminated in blue and green and lettered in red. 8vo (9 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches), half blue crushed morocco, spine with raised bands and gilt lettered direct, all edges gilt. Fine. An extraodinary undertaking which must have taken years in its execution.

Two colums heading are left blank for any other species one has bagged, e.g Elephant, Crocodile, or Python. he writes in a very shaky hand " I have been confined to the House ,,,, for over three months. I shall be 83 next August if I live & I have no idea of dying if I can help it ".The letters written in his quite difficult hand are dated : January 24th 1850 (4-sides 4to); March 7th 1850 (4-sides 4to); May 15th 1860; (2-sides 8vo); April 22 1861 (3-sides 8vo); April 17, 1861 (3-sides large 8vo); June 16th 1861 (2-sides small 8vo ); April 7th 1876 (2-sides 8vo). Touching upon many topics, publishing, women's rights etc. All in very good condition. Together with 61 loose leaves of MS verse inscribed "John Neal, Portland U.S.A copied by".
