Hazlitt's political philosophy of individual good and sympathy with others leads to self-control of population--as opposed to Malthus' concept that only imposed starvation and misery keep the poor from over-populating. [John Kinnaird and Hazlitt letters] -- Hardcover, later binding, 3/4 blue leather over marbled boards, gilt spine decoration, raised bands, top edge gilt, pages irregularly trimmed. -- Condition: very good (leather is rubbed at bands and edges; spine color a bit faded; marginal notes to a few early pages "18 Aug 1810"). -- Author (unattributed in this book) is William Hazlitt, 1778-1830. Pagination: iv, [3] - 40, 43 - 378; [6] pages of publisher's ads. Complete and collated as per Geoffrey Keynes "C8 has been cancelled ... pp.41-42 missing."

Six volumes complete. -- Includes frontispiece portrait, facsimile letter, plus name index in v.6. -- Hardcover, full leather with elaborate spine decoration, all edges marbled. Condition: very good minus (covers are worn at corners and scuffed, some more than others; page are bright and white, couple wrinkled). -- Retz lived in the political and ecclesiastical turmoil of 17th century France, and recorded his experience in these memoirs, including the court of Louis XIV and the Fronde civil war. Includes a long poem during Retz' stint in prison. -- UNIQUE COPY: This set has the bookplates of "Eug. de Castro" and 3 volumes have his SIGNATURE, presumably Eugenio de Castro (1869-1944), the famous Portuguese symbolist poet (streets and schools are named after him).

Oxford Printed at the Theater in Oxford and are to be sold by George West, 1671, hardcover. Whitby's early work published 1671 addresses "false uncertain Mammon" and includes significant amount of his Latin and Greek references for his theory. 411 pages, plus bound in are an Addenda and Errata. -- Hardcover, nice later rebinding 3/4 leather over marbled boards; inner margins are tight but readable. Condition: very good (light scuff to raised bands; text has light damp-stains; a few early blue-pencil marks). -- Collated and complete; several pages are misnumbered but the catchwords are correct.

Early reprint edition 1872 in similar format to the original: spines and title pages: Part First; Part Second; publisher's ad at rear states two volumes $3.00. -- Each volume has four illustrations. -- This copy was gifted to the owner in 1873, with a quote about friendship, written in a tiny elegant hand. -- Hardcover, two volumes, green cloth with elaborate gold spine decoration, brown endsheets. Condition: good-only (spines slanted and tips worn; covers lightly rubbed; hinges cracked on outside and inside and were possibly repaired; stain top- and bottom-edges which shows on inner margins of pages). -- Overall, the decorated spines are fairly attractive, and the early ownership makes a charming addition to this much-loved classic.
