Bound in exceptionally fine binding and in very good condition with the bookplates of Daniel Henry Holmes, an avid book collector. This edition certainly is one of the rarest being that it is a first issue. A pirate copy came out the year before in 1662 and all proceeds from the sale of the book by the thief were recovered by Butler. Lacks introduction to Lord Clifford and large plate of Virgil at the Senate. Most of the Life of Virgil, which contains the image of Virgil in the Senate is lacking. Title page remounted, Tear B1, somewhat affecting text and browned pages that correspond to other copies. Priced accordingly for this rare Subscribed Royal Folio First Edition. Folio, 7 x 11 in. Second edition. Second Folio Printing. A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Kkk6, Lll4, A-T6. There is a frontispiece portrait of Jonson copied from Robert Vaughn's plate as well as an engraved title page. This book is bound in worn full contemporary calf. The front board is slightly loose. The top margin of the title page has been trimmed closely. The edges of the first few leaves have a small tear in the margin and there is some staining near the back. Otherwise, this copy has some typical browning but is in good condition overall.
