New York: Bartlett and Welford, 1844. A fine early twentieth-century binding SIGNED BY STIKEMAN. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Covers bordered in two gilt fillets. Spine in six panels with raised bands. Lettering and elaborate floral panel designs in gilt. Inner dentelles. Sewn-in blue silk page marker. A clean, crisp copy throughout. This first collected edition of Moore's poems, published at the request of his children, contains the first book appearance of his poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas" ("Twas The Night Before Christmas") in a collection of his own work. This rare first edition is a PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Moore on the half-title page, "The Rev. Dr. Barry, with the respects of the author, Mar. 1846". Moore, a professor of Hebrew, wrote this poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. Covers and edges marbled. Hinges re-inforced probably at time of rebacking. Book-plate of Logan Clendening on front pastedown. Clendening was a distinguished teacher at the University of Kansas and a major collector of medical books. Old bookseller's description of the book dated 1950 affixed to the rear pastedown.This volume was bound without the frontispiece portrait which is supplied in facsimile. All eight engraved plates are found at the end of the book. Plates VII and VIII show some foxing at periphery, others are quite clean. A ninth plate is found at p.161. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1973. FIVE VOLUMES. Four are uniformly bound in brown calf. Volume 2 is bound in 1/4 tan leather over marbled boards. Volume 1 is a second American edition, 1794, old laced repair to front joint. Volume 2 is a first American edition, 1793, rebound with new endpapers. Title-page has been professionally repaired and mounted on acid-free paper, then reinserted. We were missing this volume and bought it as described. (See photos). Volume 3 is "An Account of the Bilious Remitting Fever, as it Appeared in the City of Philadelphia, in the Year 1793". It is a second American edition, 1894, Front joint is weak but attached. Title-page and Preface show old water-stains. Volume 4 contains further account of yellow fever and a defence of blood-letting as a remedy for certain diseases. All edges untrimmed. Two full-page woodcut illustrations by Sir Edward-Byrnes Jones, many ornamental initials and borders designed by Morris. Printed in three colors; red, blue, and black. Amsterdam, 1720. Title translated:" The Great Mirror of Folly, Showing the Rise, Progress, and Downfall of the Bubble in Stocks and Windy Speculation, Especially in France, England, and the Netherlands in the Year 1720. This copy is missing the title-page (provided in facsimile). It contains fifty-two of seventy-six plates. Exact number of plates is not certain, reported from 55 to 74, no two books are the same! All plates in our example are copper-plate engravings, well-struck with a good margin at plate extremities. They are individually bound, so that they may be opened fully within the book. Many are double-page. All are very clean nad nicely-struck. They are a satirical look at the blundered experiences of John Law, wild speculation in financing stock to exploit the Freench colonies in America! London, 1938. Written on Admiralty, Whitehall stationery, 9 1/2" by 7 1/2". Creased to fold into a fourth, to fit envelope. The letter is dated 17 October 1939, just five weeks after he became First Lord of the Admiralty on 3 September 1939, the day that Great Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. The letter is addressed to Commander C.D.O. Shakespear, Royal Navy, expressing pleasure at hearing from him again and knowing that he is serving "in the present emergency". Further states "It is indeed a long time since the days when we cruised in the "Venus". In 1908, they toured the colonial possessions in the Mediterranean together on the "Venus", an Eclipse class cruiser commissioned in 1897. They sailed from Malta to Cypress to Port Said, through Red Sea to Aden. We purchased the letter for our client at Sotheby's in London, 24 July 1995, see catalogue item #445.
