Description:
Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1755. Hardcover. Good. Very early printing of this important masterpiece, matches most conditions for a true First Edition but there is no frontispiece (it may have been removed in rebinding): three canceled pages; misspelled author's name ('Jaques' appears on title page and at end of dedication); vignettes on title and dedication pages; hand-correction on p11 (accent on conforme); ends with Errata/Avis page; no engraving at p258; on bottom edge of p159, 'L5' is mismarked 'K5'; page LXV numbered correctly; cancels and hand-corrected accent lead us to believe this is not one of the 'counterfeit' or pirated facsimile editions. 8vo, in very old full-leather binding which may be contemporary; 18th-century marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, dentilles, triple gilt rule on boards, and raised bands on spine; original blue silk ribbon, very fragile; gilt sunflowers in panels on spine; title label has just the letters that would fit so it reads… Read More

Description:
London: Edward Stanford, 1875. First Edition . Hardcover. Good. Francis Frith photos. Rare 1st edition, of which the 1877 book 'The Northern Barrier of India' is an abridgement. Has 568 pp. incl. index; many illustrations including 4 Woodbury-types (an uncommon printing process which makes photographs seem very lucid and 3-dimensional); and in the rear, folding maps; a Snow Map, a Race Map, a Language Map, a Faith Map, a Political Map, chart of 3 Isometric Views, and a chart of 4 Vertical Sections. There is also a folding chart, 'Genealogy of the Rajas of Jummo', to accompany Appendix 6. The binding is 3/4 leather, very worn, and professionally rebacked. The original leather of the spine has been preserved; the title can barely be read. Marbled boards (matching endpapers) rubbed, bookplate on front pastedown. The brittle free endpapers are both breaking at the new hinges. The text is mostly very clean; there are a couple of fingerprints in the margin of the photo, 'Kashmiri… Read More

Description:
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881. Hardcover. Good+. SECOND Edition, lt. blue cloth, good plus. Both volumes a little shaken, foxed on top edge, less on foreedge, spines darkened. Books were bound with signatures stapled rather than sewn, and this is not a good idea; the staples are rusted, and some signatures are loosening. Moderate foxing in text at beginnings and ends. All plates and maps are present, but the folding map in rear of vol. 2 (with hand-colored routes and rivers) has been repaired with packing tape, now replaced with archival tape, but stained brown where the old tape was. 424 + 422 pp., index in vol. 2.

Description:
London: Printed by J.G. for Cornelius Bee, 1660. First Edition . Hardcover. Fair. Rare First Edition of one of the most important works in the history of lexicography and a major source of the plagiarized proverbs Benjamin Franklin published in Poor Richard's Almanac. A fair copy. Ex-library: white numbers on spine, blindstamp, numbers and 'cancelled' stamp on title page, ghost of what was probably a pocket on the rear endpapers. Very old full-leather binding with 'Howell's Dictionary' on the title piece. Boards worn; corners extremely worn past leather to boards; boards once detached and now only reattached by several strips of cloth which are fairly loose. Ffep heavily chipped, with 1864 owner's name, reinforced at the foreedge. There is no half-title, first leaf is title page; two owner's names or notations, Anglesey Dec. 5 1663 and Stanford 1693. Obverse of title page blank; follows 3pp dedicatory 'To His Majesty Charles the Second'; another blank page is… Read More
