Generally good condition with just a few partial leaves either separated from or at the top of the pads. Lady Ottoline was a great patron of literature and frequently hosted the Bloomsbury group, including Virginia Woolf, and developed a stormy relationship with her. In her memoirs, Lady Ottoline said: "She seemed to feel certain of her own eminence. It is true, but it is rather crushing, for I feel she is very contemptuous of other people. When I stretched out a hand to feel another woman, I found only a very lovely, clear intellect." Green cloth with gilt spine lettering, no dustjacket. Some modest shelfwear, good hinges, sound text block, clean pages. The inscription on the front free endpaper reads: "From Ottoline to my loved Brother" dated Dec 28 1932 (looks like 1922 but that is before the book was… Read More

Description:
Hartford, CT: N.P., 1877. First edition, 1877. In a move unthought of for women of their time, the author and her sister Abby Hadassah Smith sued the town of Glastonbury, Connecticut when it attempted to levy a tax directed at single and sidowed women. Softcover, 94 pages, frontis woodcut of Abby and the cows. Fair to good with covers chipped with some staining and a crease to the front cover, rear cover detached, binding sound, some old dampstains to few outer margins, a few pages with darkened top margins, pages otherwise clean and unmarked. The author Julia Evelina Smith is best known for publishing the first translation of the Bible by a woman, in 1876, and an advertisement for this Bible is printed inside the front cover. .
