'Paris,: A. Desrez,, 1836.. 2 volumes: [viii], xii, 636; viii, 876 pp. 4to (17,6 x 25,6 cm.). Uniformly bound in red polished calf. A splendid and most exuberant Simier binding: Front and rear sides with large blind stamped center medaillion (un beau décor à plaque romantique, 111 x 196 mm.) showing ornamental and peacock motifs, octavo gilt rullers along the edges of the sides with gilt floral decorations in the corners; Spine with 4 double raised bands, gilt lettered and richly gilt tooled, signed 'Simier R. du Roi' at the bottom of each spine; Gilt line along the outer edges of the sides; Floral ruller along the inner edges of the sides; Blue-white marbled end-papers with repeating peackock motifs; edges gilt. ¶ Les Simier (René, 1772-1843 & Alphonse, 1796-1859), "relieurs du roi" were the indisputable master bookbinders of the Romantic period. The present piece is an outstanding example of their art. A lovely, and almost perfect copy.
