First edition of this justly famous children's book with anthropomorphised kangaroo characters - 'perhaps the best known story entirely devoted to the kangaroo' (Robert Holden 'The Mint Exhibition' 1985). Twelve stories of kangaroos told in verse with many small drawings in sepia and twelve beautifully printed, full-page, partially-coloured plates. Quarto, full colour pictorial boards, edge rubbing, corner wear, chipping of paper at spine ends and along spine edges, two pages with minor nicks at page edge, clean and bright, a very good copy indeed overall.

1889 1ed Queensland Cannibals Lumholtz Australia Aborigine Illustrated Maps

The Norwegian, naturalist, anthropologist and explorer Carl Lumholtz spent four years in Australia from 1880. Lumholtz' expedition to Australia was partly paid at the expense of the University of Christiania, to collect zoological and zootomical material for the museums of the University, and research the manners and anthropology of the natives, and among the cannibals. Lumholtz succeeded in securing a large collection of zoological specimens and discovered four new mammals - a tree kangaroo and three opossums, which are depicted in the colored lithographed plates. He collected four new species of mammals with his account of his travels, Among Cannibals, containing detailed observations of Aboriginal life.
This 1889 first edition includes 2 folding colored maps, 29 plates including frontispiece portrait and 4 colored lithographs, and numerous in text illustrations.

Atchison, Kansas: E. W. Howe, 1913. Seven consecutive monthly issues (February-August 1913) of E. W. HOWE'S MONTHLY bound together without original covers. Each issue has 64 pages except for April, which has 56 pages. Olive-gray buckram covered boards, with gilt title ("Travel Notes") on the spine. These seven issues contain Howe's narrative, musings, and observations during his travels in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and several ports on the east coast of Africa during the Spring of 1913. Included are 3 brief letters signed by Howe (1 tipped in and 2 laid in), all to Charles A. Goddard, publisher of the Fayetteville (W. Va.) Tribune and Free Press. Although Goddard did not put his name on any of the issues, the presence of the 3 letters strongly suggests that he was responsible for selecting these "travel" issues and having them bound. This 1853 first edition contains numerous full-page and folding engravings including a frontispiece of a Dourga Strait hunter and a map of New Guinea!
