The previous owner's name is written on the inside of the front cover and his seal is affixed to the front cover. The pages are clear of any markings crisp and white. "It is a most invaluable part of the blessed "liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free," that in his worship different forms and usages may without offence be allowed, provided the substance of the Faith be kept entire; and that in every Church, what cannot be clearly determined to belong to Doctrine must be referred to Discipline; and therefore, by common consent and authority, may be altered, abridged, enlarged, amended, or otherwise disposed of, as may seem most convenient for the edification of the people, "according to the various exigency of times and occasions...."" - Preface from The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church Together with The Psalter or Psalms of David… Read More

Description:
1795 ENORMOUS McDowall Family Bible Kennicott IRISH Dublin Ireland Illustrated

The 'Kennicott Bible' has long been known as one of the most lavishly illustrated Bibles of the 18th-century. Benjamin Kennicott was a well-known English Hebraist who studied the Hebrew Bible and made his life's work studying and comparing variants of Hebrew manuscripts. And while mass-produced editions of Kennicott's Bible were not produced with the same vibrancy and page-to-page illustrations as the original, Family Bibles with Kennicott's translations are still popular and widely read.

This 1795 Dublin printing was published by Zachariah Jackson who included 50 impressive, full-page engravings in this 'authorized' edition.

Description:
1587 Apocrypha Old Testament Holy BIBLE Vulgate Latin Kings Chronicles Job Tobit
An extremely rare and rather unknown 16th-century portion of the Old Testament. Bibles from this era are notoriously rare and have maintained their desirability through centuries. This particular issue is curious – a complete book in itself containing (per the title page) only the books of Kings, Chronicles, Esdras (i.e. Ezra, Nehemiah and Esdras), Tobit, Judith, Esther, and Job. It is unclear who the editor of this Vulgate Bible is; however, the USTC places it published somewhere in Germany in 1587. Still, a very rare and desirable 16th-century Bible.

Description:
1547 Saint Anselm of Canterbury BIBLE Epistles of Paul Benedictine Scholasticism

"I believe in order that I may understand."
– Anselm of Canterbury
Saint Anselm of Canterbury was an 11th-century Benedictine monk and philosopher. While Anselm was relatively unknown and unrecognized for his philosophical views during his lifetime, he has since been considered the founder of scholasticism and writing about the existence of God in an academic manner rather than purely theological. The ODCC refers to Anselm as being 'the most luminous and penetrating intellect between St. Augustine and Thomas Aquinas…and the father of scholasticism'. Many of his writings set the stage for a European period of innovating logic, ethics, mysticism, and metaphysics.
This 1547 printing of the works of Anselm features his commentary on the Epistles of Paul.

Description:
1578 Letters of Saint Jerome Bible Catholic Church Epistles Plantin Press FOLIO

"When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting."
– Jerome, Epistle 58

Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his 'Epistles.' These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.
This 16th-century edition was collected and edited by Mariano Vittori and published by the famed Plantin Press. This particular 1578 tome contains the Epistles as well as Jerome's commentary on numerous books of the Bible.

1720 Life of King David Illustrated Goliath Bible Psalms ISRAEL MAP French ART

Abbe Choisy's "History and Life of David" is a rare, early 18th-century history of King David of the Old Testament and King of Israel. The contents of this book are important in themselves, but the draw of this book is the impressive woodcut engravings throughout depicting the life of David – views from his childhood as a musician and shepherd, his battle with Goliath and the Philistines, and when he heard of the death of Absalom. It also features a huge, folding map of Israel at the front.

1550 Claude Guilliaud BIBLE Commentary Gospel of John FOLIO French Huguenot era

Claude Guilliaud was a 16th-century French theologian known for his Bible commentaries and sermons preached against heresy. His works were not seen as favorable by the Catholic Church and many of his works were placed on the Prohibited Books Index until he agreed to revise them (Farge). The first work to avoid being banned was his 'Ennarationes in Evangelium Johanni' – an annotated edition of the Gospel of John with commentary.

This impressive folio edition was published in 1550 in Lutetiae, Paris, bound in original 16th-century leather.

Description:
1665 Puritan GREEK Bible & Common Prayer & Psalms of David John Field Cambridge

An incredibly rare 17th-century John Field Greek version of the Psalms of David and Book of Common Prayer

The Cambridge Holy Bible, printed completely in Greek, was "sometimes known as the 'Preaching Bible'." (Herbert 697). John Field printed Greek Bibles are extremely rare and popular amongst Greek scholars and still used by 21st-century preachers.

This John Field Bible is 'Variation A' of his Greek Bible. According to D&M,
"the figure in the oval device Alma Mater Contabrigia on the title page is holding the sun in the right hand and the cup in the left, while the motto Hinc lucem… begins at the bottom on the left side. Field's own original edition!" (D&M 4701) *

Darlow and Moule notes that
"Field's edition was counterfeited page for page, by John Hayes, a Cambridge printer, who executed an edition in 1684, to which he put Field's name, and date of 1665."

This edition of the Book of Psalms is NOT the Hayes… Read More

Description:
1573 Confessions of St Augustine Catholic & Protestant Bible Theology Louvain
Augustine of Hippo was a 5th-century early Christian church philosopher and theologian. While most known for his work 'City of God', he also wrote many other treatises on aspects of the Christian faith. His stance on free will vs. predestination and fatalism was supported by and still is supported by, the Catholic Church, as his teachings on free will are consistent with modern doctrine.
One of Augustine's most important works was 'Confessions' – collection of shorter treatises that were autobiographical in nature. In fact, because of this, it is often considered the very first Western autobiography ever written.
This 1573 Louvain edition was published by Welleus.
