About This Item
Charleston, SC: Babcock & Co., 1845. SCARCE Confederate States of Americas Association Copy, bearing the small bookplate and 2 signatures of William Cabell Rives (May 4, 1793 - April 25, 1868), a member of the First Families of Virginia who served in the U.S. House and Senate and two separate terms as U.S. Minister to France. He later served in the Provisional Confederate Congress from 1861 to 1862 and the Second Confederate Congress from 1864 to 1865. Very Good, professionally rebacked with spine laid over with some loss of gilt decorations and gilt lettering dulled, prior owner bookplate and inscriptions front and rear end pages, tipped in photograph of a George Washington statue at rear end pages, some marginal pencil notations by the latter owner, and an extended biographical manuscript inscription about Rives, taken from p. 37 of "The Plantation South", at 2nd. front end page. Moderate toning, large fold-out map of Virginia Near Fine, with small tear at right edge. A fascinating copy of a SCARCE Virginia history. . First Edition. Embossed Leather . Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.
