London: Richard Bentley, 1853. 2 Vol. 3/4 Leather over marbled paper covered boards, and eppr. First English edition of Alexandrine des Echerolles' memoirs of the Revolution in France. Alexandrine des Echerolles (La Ferte Hauterive, south of Moulins-Allier) was 13 y.o. when the Revolution forced her father, aunt and brothers to take refuge in Lyon. Her father had been elected colonel of the National Guards at Moulins, but when he was threatened with imprisonment he fled to Lyon then Switzerland, and left his daughter in the care of his sister. The aunt was murdered by the revolutionary court for refusing to reveal where her brother was living, and Alexandrine found herself alone, and relied on family and relations to taker her in.

The binding is worn and bumped, and the spine ends are chipped. Bottom corner bumped and creased. Scuffing along the fore edge of the front cover. A sound copy. The text is toned. The two leaves for pages 63-66 have large creases at the top right, affecting the text. Signed by an officer on the front cover. Signed "A. F. Kingman" who is listed in the rear of the book as 2nd Lt / 1st Lt. Capt. Early markings (presumably by Kingman), have pencil notations in the list of names, some marginal notes reading "KIA" for those killed in action. Scarce.

Description:
First Edition. London 1937. Scarce copy of the personal perspective of the Irish journalist and war correspondent Francis McCullagh (1874-1956) on the Spanish Civil War which was raging as he wrote.
In his account, he is unashamedly sympathetic to Franco and the Fascist cause and includes commentary on the Irish and Blueshirt involvement in the war.
The binding is tight. Book has age related shelf wear but boards are sound with slight soiling to rear cover and spine.
Gilt lettering on spine (a little faded). Spine extremities a little rubbed.
Text block is very good+ with very light spotting to to first three leaves and final three leaves only. Otherwise leaves clean with no markings.Small black mark on lower edge not affecting leaves.
A very good copy. Very scarce.

The author was a UK journalist who traveled to Spain at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and enlisted in the International Brigade to fight against the fascists. A rare English language account of the early stages of that War, and the mood of the Spanish citizenry.
Condition of the book is Very Good. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete and unmarked. The book shows general wear from age and storage.
Condition of the dust jacket is Very Good Minus. The DJ is complete, not price clipped. It shows moderate wear, including sun-lightening of the spine. It is protected in a new mylar cover.
