(Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 242) 1st edition.Tassilo, Baron von Heydebrand und der Lasa (known in English as "Baron von der Lasa" was an important German chessmaster, chess historian and theoretician of the nineteenth century, a member of the Berlin Chess Club and a founder of the Berlin Chess School (the Berlin Pleiades). His name is usually abbreviated as "von der Lasa", as this is how he signed his letters. However both contemporary and more recent writers have used other abbreviations, such as "von Heydebrandt" (which is a mis-spelling) and "Der Lasa". The Prussian King (later Emperor) William I made a joke out of the confusion by saying, "Good morning, dear Heydebrand. How is von der Lasa doing?" Von der Lasa was born 17 October 1818 in Berlin. He studied law in Bonn and Berlin. From 1845 he was a diplomat in the service of Prussia.… Read More

1824 1ed GAMBLING Fatal Effects William Weare Thurtell Murder Trial Law Macabre

"They cut his throat from ear to ear,
His head they battered in.
His name was Mr William Weare,
He lived in Lyons Inn."

This fascinating, illustrated work describes the notorious trial of the gruesome murder of Mr. William Weare. On October 24, 1823, following a gambling dispute, John Thurtell and his two accomplices Joseph Hunt and William Probert apprehended and brutally murdered Weare. The culprits would later be discovered and arrested, consequently both the murder and subsequent trial famously exposed the criminal underworld of London to a curious and ignorant public audience causing enormous public interest and media coverage. The latter portion of this work entitled, 'The Gambler's Scourge' offers intriguing commentary regarding the dangerous practices and consequences of gambling.

"They cut his throat from ear to ear,
His head they battered in.
His name was Mr William Weare,
He lived in Lyons Inn."

"The Fatal Effects of Gambling" is a detailed account of the notorious murder of William Weare, a gambler and solicitor, at the hands of John Thurtell, a sports promoter and amateur boxer, who was deeply indebted to Weare due to a gambling dispute. The book uncovers the gruesome details of this October 1823 murder, known as the Radlett murder, and the subsequent trial which exposed the dark underbelly of gambling and crime in London. It vividly portrays the brutal acts of Thurtell and his accomplices, Joseph Hunt and William Probert, and the subsequent public fascination.

The second part of the book, "The Gambler's Scourge," critiques the destructive practices of gambling and offers anecdotes of well-known criminals. This narrative, enriched with 10 engraved plates, helped bring to light the… Read More
