Three plates of this edition (2, 8 and 9) did not appear in the second edition. *Apperley had been Myttons neighbour in Shropshire. Original (or contemporary) green cloth stamped in blind on the sides and lettered in gold on the front panel and the spine panel, glazed yellow endpapers. Frontispiece and fifteen numbered plates with sixteen hand-colored illustrations and fourteen in black and white from drawings by the author taken on site during a series of expeditions to the Bontebok Flats and other hunting grounds. Each scene is described in the text with details on the game and the methods of hunting. The plates are in remarkably good condition with some occasional light spots. 1597 Poetry of Oppian Greco-Roman FISHING & Hunting Commodus Greek Plantin RARE

Oppian of Anazarbus, or simply Oppian, was a 2nd-century Greek poet who is only remembered for his Greek poems on fishing and hunting. Of his surviving works, his poem on fishing (De piscatu) is his most important, much in part because it was dedicated to Marcus Aurelius and Commodus.

This 1597 edition of the poems of Oppian includes two major poems - the expected poem on fishing and the other on hunting. However, it should be noted that the Oppian named as the author of the hunting poem is Oppian of Syria. According to scholars, Oppian of Syria was familiar with the hunting poem of Oppian of Anazarbus and wrote his poem as a supplement to the former.
