Tacoma, Washington:: Anagram Press / Goat Back Press,, 2015.. Edition of 50. 7 x 9" closed, extends to 15 feet; 20 pages including pastedowns. Accordion structure. Digitally printed from watercolor illustrations on archival, 100% cotton paper. Handbound paper over boards. In paper slipcase. Signed by both artists and numbered. Empire Builder is a collaboration between artists Carol Inderieden and Chandler O'Leary; both contributed text and illustrations. The two artists lament the changes they have seen in the American West, changes driven by the thirst for oil and natural gas, changes spawned by fracking in North Dakota and ending in oil refineries of Washington. It is the story of tunnel vision and the attendant environmental consequences. The book "reads like a map - tracing both the route of the Empire Builder train and the path of industry and destruction, in one long, unbroken line." Colophon excerpts: "Seeing the Elephant was a figure of speech that came to… Read More

A very rare and fine set of 106 lithographed plates depicting the Swedish trailway buildings and trains. Sweden started building railways comparatively late. Sweden hesitated under heavy debate for several years because of the costs and other issues. Following the parliament's decision in 1854 a colonel of the Navy Mechanical Corps, Nils Ericson, was chosen as the leader for the project of building the main lines (stambanorna). His proposal was that the line between Gothenburg and Stockholm (Västra Stambanan) should run south of Lake Mälaren to avoid competition with shipping. This was completed in 1862.He also proposed that the line between Malmö and Stockholm (Södra stamabanan) should go to Nässjö and then on to… Read More

1864 Civil War 1st ed 60th New York Infantry Union Gettysburg SLAVERY Railroads
The 60th-New York Volunteer Infantry was a famous Civil War Union regiment known for playing an important role in various battles including the Battle of Gettysburg. Author Richard Eddy wrote an account of the regiment and its involvement in the war; however, according to Nevins, this work is much more a "damnation of the South and slavery than a regimental history." Other notable contents include reports on railroads and railroad lines, description of Union barracks, and of course descriptions of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
