1783 Marine Vocabulary Lescallier Navigation SHIPS Voyages Thomas Jefferson RARE
Daniel Lescallier was an 18th-century French writer best-known for his work on maritime history and navigation. He was well acquainted with important political figures of the time including both Napoleon Bonaparte and Thomas Jefferson, both of whom influenced his works. Among his best writings was 'Vocabulary of Marine Terms' a work which Thomas Jefferson included in his personal library (Sowerby 1232).
This work contains hundreds of terms associated with sailing, navigation, maritime law, ships, and voyages. This 1783 issue is of particular note – published in both French and English
and contains numerous exquisite engravings. The engravings of ships and masts are particularly desirable.

[8],+320 pages. Small quarto (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in contemporary vellum with title in script on spine. (Medina BHA 5346; Palau 214290; Sabin 58993) First edition.Fray Antonio Raimundo Pascual was a Majorcan Cistercian brother. He wrote at least six works that were published in his lifetime, four of which dealt with Llull.Treatise seeking to show that the medieval Catalan thinker Ramón Lull (or Llull; 1232?-1316), a native of Palma, Majorca, had discovered the use of the magnetic compass in navigation, and that Lull's theories regarding the existence of a Western continent influenced Columbus. Llull's Art (in Latin Ars) is at the center of his thought and undergirds his entire corpus. It is a system of universal logic based on a set of general principles activated in a combinatorial process. It can be used to prove statements about God and Creation (e.g., God is a Trinity). Often the Art formulates these statements as questions and answers (e.g., Q: Is there a Trinity in God? A: Yes.). It works… Read More

Navy cloth binding with gilt title on the spine and front board. A Rule Britannia Book
John Fredrick Thomas Jane (6 August 1865 – 8 March 1916) was the founding editor of reference books on warships (All the World's Fighting Ships) and aircraft (All the World's Airships) and the namesake of what would become Jane's Information Group and many of its publications. Jane was born in Richmond, Surrey, England, but worked most of his life in Portsmouth. His father was a Church of England vicar and he attended Exeter School. He first began to sketch warships in his teens, and was notable in the 1890s for illustrating scientific romances by George Griffith and other authors, as well as for his own science fiction novels such as To Venus in Five Seconds (published in 1897) and The Violet Flame (1899). An avid miniatures wargamer, Jane first published All the World's Fighting Ships (known as Jane's Fighting Ships after 1905) in 1898, which catalogued all the warships operated by each country, their… Read More
