All three volumes with clean text and in sturdy bindings. Very well-preserved with gilt lettering on the Junks volumes almost bright as new.

Daniel Lescallier was an 18th-century French writer best-known for his work on maritime history and navigation. He was well acquainted with important political figures of the time including both Napoleon Bonaparte and Thomas Jefferson, both of whom influenced his works. Among his best writings was 'Vocabulary of Marine Terms' a work which Thomas Jefferson included in his personal library (Sowerby 1232).
This work contains hundreds of terms associated with sailing, navigation, maritime law, ships, and voyages. This 1783 issue is of particular note – published in both French and English
and contains numerous exquisite engravings. The engravings of ships and masts are particularly desirable.

An unusual daily account by Lieutenant Augustus Phillimore, serving as mate on H.M.S. Hibernica. The work covers the sea trials the Hibernica was participating in, along with H.M.S. Rattler, Polyphemus, Raleigh, Superb, Constance, Eurydice, Spartan, St. Vincent, Queen, Vanguard, Canopus, Rodney and Albion.
The ships departed Cork in poor weather conditions, sailing in two lines to Lisbon. There are two full page plans showing the sailing formations, which are accompanied by a table recording the distance between the Hibernica and the other ships in the formation. John Fredrick Thomas Jane (6 August 1865 – 8 March 1916) was the founding editor of reference books on warships (All the World's Fighting Ships) and aircraft (All the World's Airships) and the namesake of what would become Jane's Information Group and many of its publications. Jane was born in Richmond, Surrey, England, but worked most of his life in Portsmouth. His father was a Church of England vicar and he attended Exeter School.
