Saint-Petersbourg, 1899 Covers in Poor Condition, INTERIORS IN VERY GOOD++ CONDITION. 60pp, complete with 189 silhouettes, letter-press plates, each with a tissue guard and biographical notes, depicting Catherine the Great's Court, Entourage and Collaborators. Text in Russian and French. In original stiff paper covers, lacking 3 of the leather covers and most of the backstrips, with an occasional edge chip to page [not affecting the silhouettes], occasional exit stamp (ink) dated October 25, 1941. BINDINGS TIGHT, PLATES BRIGHT.

"Webster, Printer, Horse Wynd" printed at the foot of the last page. Bound in full leather, with a gilt armorial lion holding up a book, with a banner below it reading "Concordia Et Sedulitate" showing on front and back covers, raised bands on gilt decorated spine, gilt edges, covers NOT detached, and the covers are in Very Good Condition. Stolpen [Germany]: Gustav Winter, 1867 From the personal collection of W. D. Vincent [bibliophile], with his bookplate. This copy belonged to his brother, Lyle Vincent, Signed "Lyle Vincent / Hebron / Labrador / Aug 12, / 1892" on the front free endpaper. In the summer of 1892, Lyle Vincent, W. D. Vincent, and Ralph Taber procured a small schooner called the "Evelena", for the purpose of going to Labrador to recruit Inuit [Eskimo] to bring back to Chicago, to form a "human ethnic exhibit" at the World's Columbian Exposition {Chicago's World Fair} which would open the following Spring. They brought back with them 59 Inuit from Rigolet, Davis Inlet, Hamilton Inlet, and other Northern reaches, representing an ancient race unsullied by civilization. Japan: Kodansha, 1978 SCARCE - none in OCLC. 204pp, bound in creme cloth, with binding and hinges tight. Complete with all 236 woodcut illustrations by Un'ichi Hiratsuka, some folding, some in colour. Hiratsuka (1895-1997) was born in Matsue, Shimane in Japan, and became one of the prominent leaders of the sosaku hanga movement in 20th Century Japan. The sosaku hanga movement represented the artist as the sole creator of art, being a form of self expression, and breaking away from the traditional shin-hanga movement that maintained the traditional ukiyo-e collaborative system of creating art. Russia, 1922 By the Russian artist, Georges Annenkoff, also known as Yuri or Yury Pavlovich Annenkov [1889-1974]. 172pp, printed on hard stock watermaked paper [Linen Fibr], bound in stiff brown paper covers with yap edges, complete with 80 illustrations of which 10 are color plates, and 27 are black and white plates. all with descriptive tissue guards intact [in Russian and English], the balance being text illustrations throughout. SCARCE. First Limited Edition, this being one of 900 copies. Text is in Russian. From the personal collection of Lorna Marshall (1898-2002], a well known anthropologist that lived among the !Kung people of the Kalahari Desert, and author of several books based on her studies. The covers show edge wear/tear, interior binding is loose, one plate detached, lower edge damp mark on one plate, not affecting the image. The Dust Jacket shows edge wear/tear/chips, with a damp mark on the back, now housed in a protective mylar cover.

This is the First Dozza Printing, Second Printing of the Macchie Solari, being preceeded by the 1613 edition. Complete with eight plates, as called for, along with folding map (no tears). Two signatures present, the first being "G. R. Storrar", George Ronald Storrar (1877-1959) served as Assistant Engineer on the Sudan Government Railway from 1905-1927, during the Madhist War, and saw action against the Sultinate of Darfor during the British Campaign in that region. He retired as Chief Engineer at Atbara, and was also known for his photography of the locals. Also the signature of (Dr.) Charles H. Kanze Sakon is a name which has been handed down from generation to generation by the headmen of the Shite-kata (actors who play leading characters in Japanese Noh Theatre) of the Kanze School.
