Autobiography and first book by one of our greatest songwriters, author of this country's unofficial national anthem, "This Land Is Your Land." Quite scarce in the first edition, especially in a dustwrapper, this title served as the basis for the Hal Ashby film starring David Carradine. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the legendary author on the front endpaper with the last line of "Talking Union," a slogan that came to be identified with Guthrie: "To/Ray and Betty/Lusk/from me/to you/Woody Guthrie/5-19-'47/take it easy/but take it."

1827. Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. This is a one of a kind original handwritten working manuscript by the famous French chansonnier, Pierre-Jean de Béranger. These chansons are dated 1827 and were subsequently published in his fourth collection of chansons, the one which precipitated his punishment of nine months imprisonment in La Force Prison. In addition, there is one page which seems to be a crossed out chanson that may not have been published. The manuscript is about 32 pages long (with additional blank pages). The chansons are written in Béranger's hand and contain alterations and edits. It is a real, working manuscript. This is really a museum quality piece that would also be the jewel of any private collection. Text in French. Rebound in flexible red leather boards with gold gilt titles. Commissioned jointly by the New York Philharmonic and Kölnmusik and the Orchestre National de Lyon, Through the Ancient Valley was first performed on 14 March 2001 by the New York Philharmonic with Kurt Masur conducting and Yo-Yo Ma as soloist; Mr. Ma was also soloist in the first performances in France and Germany. Two scuffs to paper at jacket rear panel. Minor foxing. Crease to bottom corner of a few pages. Text is clean and unmarked, frontispiece. First Edition is stated, first issue jacket present. Signed and inscribed by the author, Woody Guthrie, on the front end page. An inscription as vibrant and humble as would be expected of Guthrie; written upside down, one can picture the book being handed to Guthrie and him signing before rotating the book. Guthrie tells the recipient, Marshall, "I hope you find some real 'fight' in this book..." The inscription is dated to April 1943, a few weeks after the book's publication. It would be difficult to understate Guthrie's influence on American folk music and as well as American popular music. 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Fantastic printed music score for voice and piano for this opera in full signed on the opposite to the title page by Puccini and Evan Gorga, the first Rodolfo. Gorga wrote a long sentiment and signed this at a very old age to an Italian opera fan and collector, dating his autograph in 1952. Puccini signed and dated his autograph apparently in 1903 (the exact number is hard to read) in Torre del Lago.
Cesira Ferrani signed on page 70, at the beginning of her most famous aria, "Mi Chiamanó Mimi".
Both Gorga and Ferrani were the creators of the Rodolfo and Mimi roles in the world premiere of this opera, in 1896.
This is an early edition of this score, published in 1898 by Giulio Ricordi, 277 numbered pages, nice light teal-colored hardcovers with golden designs on front and verso, spine is in good condition with some professional repairs on corners, spotted rust on some of the first pages, 8.25 x 11 inches, in overall very good condition.

Together with the published libretto which was written by the composer and published by Boosey and Hawkes, heavily annotated by the Maxwell Davies. The outline is addressed to Roddy and begins 'I enclose a text of the opera Taverner. This is based on the history of John Taverner, the early English composer, who was employed by Wolsey', Davies then writes a list of all the characters and continues by describing in detail, the action for Act I (scenes i, ii, iii and iv) and Act II (scenes i, ii, iii and iv).
