Bindings with edgewear, spines deteriorated; boards detached on the third volume, the front board nearly detached on the first. Bindings quite worn but contents Very Good. Four folio (10" x 16") volumes bound in calf-backed marbled boards of one of the most spectacular illustrated works of the 18th-century. Illustrated with 263 engravings, all but 1 full page and some with more than one image, and including 41 large folding plates. First published in 1723 with 223 copper engravings, this edition is enlarged and appears to be the last published in the 18th century and in folio size. The plates, many double-page, illustrate in great detail scenes of religious ceremonies, views of temples and churches, and religious costumes. This edition is not in Sabin. Full title: 'A common apologie of the Church of England against the uniust challenges of the ouer-iust sect, commonly called Brownists. Wherein the grounds and defences, of the separation are largely discussed: occasioned, by a late pamphlet published under the name, of an answer to a censorious epistle, which the reader shall finde prefixed to the severall sections.' Rare book, rebound in simple, plain (no title), dark leather boards. Stamped 'Library of Hannibal Hamlin,' Abraham Lincoln's Vice President. Underlining and margin notes possibly in his hand (appears so). Pages have original Stansby watermark. Leather boards have edge wear, scratches, scuffs, rubbed corners/spine, slightly chipped. Pages have water stains in margins, dirt smudges, some age browning and age spots, some foxing and bent page corners, a couple pages creased. Dirt on edge..

Lacking final blank leaf. 20 Woodcut illustrations depicting imagery from the "Apocalypse of John" accompany the text. Occasional woodcut decorative initials are also present. The title displays Ambroise Girault’s woodcut printer’s device. A clipped area (1.7 x 6 cm) in the upper outer margin of the title page is carefully restored using matching period paper (difficult to notice at first glance). The title is also marked with the addition of red hand-ruled panel lines, well executed, (perhaps done at an early date) imitating a style sometimes seen in 17th century English Bibles and prayer books. Two works bound in a single vellum bound volume, published in 1712 and 1704 respectively. 919 pages, plus 17 page index; And 664 pages, plus 62 pages of index. The second title with a portrait frontispiece. Hand inked titles and institutional number on spine, as well as remnants of older library sticker. College library book plate on top paste down, and a few inked numbers on end leaves. Inked name on first title page. There are a few neatly ruled dark red underlines in text, as well as a few very early marginalia. Otherwise, both works remain clean and intact.

Frankfurt: Egenholff, 1539. Vellum. Good+/No Dust Jacket. Folio. 32 nonpaginated pages, followed by 402 leaves numbered in the upper right recto corner (804 pages). Title page with 2/3 of page illustrated. There are 71 small circular portrait illustrations, most appearing as emperors and within the first 100 leafs. Leaves I, VIII, and XIIII all show small illustrations (quarter to sixteenth page). Leaves measure approx. 29 x 19 cm (11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Bound in full vellum with raised spine bands and extensive tooling showing scenes and portraits assumed to be significant to the content. Engraved brass clasps are intact, albeit a bit tarnished. Vellum is rubbed and scuffed, and shows a little chipping and wear along edges. A small section near the center of the bottom cover shows a near circular crack, though there is no loosening of any part. No date, though circa mid-late 18th century. 144 leaves (288 pages) on velum leaves, bound in leather. Sinew tied. Mostly black lettering, though with some in red. One full page illustration in color of Madonna and Child. There are a few decorative breaks between sections of text. Written in Ge'ez, an ancient South Semitic language originating in Eritrea and the northern region of Ethiopia. Once the official language of Aksum and Ethiopia, it now remains primarily used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and to a lesser degree by the Beta Israel Jewish Community (Wikipedi, 2017). Bottom cover is lacking, though all contents appear present. The first leaf is heavily rubbed and mostly illegible.
