An early wine list from the legendary Manhattan restaurant Lutèce (1961-2004). Displaying a fine selection of Bordeaux, Rouges & Blancs; Bougognes, Rouges; Roses Loire; Alsace Rhône; and Champagnes, including Lafite Rothschild dating to the 1890s, Haut Brion from the 1930s, and pre-depression era Mouton. Throughout, each selection lists producer as well location of the vineyard. The three Alsatian wines on the list have been credited as the primary genesis of the Alsatian wine market in the United States. Original embossed soft boards. = A sparkling, ephemeral work, published in only 350 copies, and nicely illustrated by the Belgian artist Armand Massonet (1892-1979). During World War I, Massonet served as a stretcher-bearer for the Belgian Army while working for the art section of the Army, capturing scenes of war and devastation throughout Belgium. London: Whittaker and Co., Ave Maria Lane; Printed by Manning and Mason, 1839. Duodecimo (18 x 11 cm.), xv, 200 pages. FIRST EDITION. A guide to the buying, storing and drinking of wine by the journalist and author, Cyrus Redding, 1785-1870. 'The chief thing in the art of drinking wine is to keep within those salutary limits which mark the beneficial from the pernicious ... This is best done by studying self-respect, and the art of saying "no".' A large collection of charming aphorisms, 'wine sayings of my uncle', completes the volume: 'Your stomach is your wine-cellar - keep the stock small and cool ... Wine of the second bottle is a bad storyteller ...' In publisher's gilt-titled and decorated brown, patterned cloth. Small chip to the head of the cloth spine; some light fading to cloth at spine, otherwise near fine. Scarce. [OCLC locates twenty-one copies; Gabler G35820].

Description:
1723 Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys Brathwait English Satire Alcohol Wine Beer

Richard Brathwait was a 17th-century English poet who is best known for his travel records of his journeys through England entitled 'Barnabae Itinerarium'. More commonly known as 'Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys', this book is a satirical, humorous work which made light of drunkenness, persuading the reader that it was "the very fountain from which all wit flowed." (Critical Review, 1805).
This 1723 edition was notable, not only for its full-page engravings, but for the inclusion of additional English notes and prefatory material, not in the previous two editions. Like other versions, this work features both English and Latin translations in verse, which contain descriptions of English towns and a vast knowledge of Latin classical works.

Description:
1779 Cookbook MENON French Cuisine Cooking for Women Wine Liquor Food Recipes

The Menon Cookbook is perhaps one of the most famous 18th-century cookbooks ever published. While the identity of the author is never revealed, he is generally referred to as Menon. 'La Cuisiniere Bourgeoise' is one of the best-known and oft reprinted cookbooks and features hundreds of recipes and food preparations along with beer and wine making, ingredients, and strategies for cooking. Menon is known to include fewer seasonings and ingredients that are cheaper thus creating a sense of 'lower-class' food; even though Menon focuses on beautiful and eye-appealing dishes.

This cookbook was also known to be the very first cookbook devoted specifically to a woman cook. Menon himself said that the title could be read as either 'cuisine' or 'woman cook'. Either way, it answered a real need in France of female home-cooks along with recipes acceptable for the bourgeois. (Willan, 218-225). It was also the only cookbook to be… Read More
