About This Item

LONDON: Gollancz, 1938. First edition, first printing. Published by Gollancz in London, 1938. A very good book with a small name and date to the front endpaper. Some fading to the gilt titles. Spotting to the page edges and top edge. Some rubbing to the corners and edges. In a very good dust wrapper, which has a minute chip to the head of the spine. The spine is browned (as is usual). Some light loss to corners. A very nice example of the wrapper indeed. The ALS, written in Du Maurier's hand is on 'Greyfriars, Church Crookham, Fleet, Hants.' headed and watermarked paper. Written in blue ink, it is inscribed "Dear Sir [...] It is a great encouragement to know that 'Renecca' appears to serious readers, beside the ordinary novel-reading public who read for excitement. Thank you indeed for writing. Yours sincerely, Daphne du Maurier". It is a stunning signature, with her hand bold and fluid throughout. The ink intensifies on the rear side, presumably due to her running out of ink. A bestseller which has never gone out of print, Rebecca sold 2.8 million copies between its publication in 1938 and 1965. It has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen, including a 1939 play by du Maurier herself, the film Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and the 2020 remake directed by Ben Wheatley for Netflix.

Synopsis

An orphaned young woman working as a maid is swept off her feet by a wealthy widowed Englishman, and quickly married him. But when she arrives at his estate she learns she pales in comparison with his seemingly perfect deceased first wife Rebecca, especially in the eyes of the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. When Rebecca’s body is found on her shipwrecked boat the dark secrets held by the husband are discovered as well. Rebecca has had many adaptations in film, radio, and television, the most famous being the Academy-Award Winning Hitchcock adaptation released in 1940. Du Maurier wrote the novel in a reported 4 months. Her publisher, Gollancz, expected the book to be successful and ordered 20,000 copies for the first print run. Within a month the novel had sold twice that.
