About This Item

NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1939. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Fairly early printing (in the year after publication) of this classic novel, near fine in a very good dust jacket. The book is tight and square, with just slight darkening on the endpapers from binder's glue. Maroon cloth boards have a silver band around the boards horizontally with a scene repeated from the jacket illustration. The jacket has internal tape repairs along the edges of the spine, and small external tape repairs at the foot of the spine. There is also a closed tear across the middle of the spine that is almost invisible in the jacket protector provided. The jacket also has some edgewear, but is 99% complete, and the colors are still pretty bright. At the top of the jacket flap is printed "This is copy No. 243456 of Rebecca" with the number in red. The $2.75 price is also present on the front flap, and there are no names or other marking in or on the book.

Synopsis

An orphaned young woman working as a maid is swept off her feet by a wealthy widowed Englishman, and quickly married him. But when she arrives at his estate she learns she pales in comparison with his seemingly perfect deceased first wife Rebecca, especially in the eyes of the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers. When Rebecca’s body is found on her shipwrecked boat the dark secrets held by the husband are discovered as well. Rebecca has had many adaptations in film, radio, and television, the most famous being the Academy-Award Winning Hitchcock adaptation released in 1940. Du Maurier wrote the novel in a reported 4 months. Her publisher, Gollancz, expected the book to be successful and ordered 20,000 copies for the first print run. Within a month the novel had sold twice that.
