About This Item

Pantheon, 1963. Book Club. Red cloth. Near fine/Very good. Book club hardcover shows a hint of bumping to bottom corners and some other very light trace wear, else tight and clean, in very good dust jacket clipped at top of front flap with 2/63 date at bottom of same that shows a closed tear at bottom of front flap and some other mild edgewear, along with touch of soil. 592 pages. Still a pleasing copy of this early book club offering of the "..novel of incomparable narrative zest and penetrating social criticism.

Synopsis

Acclaimed as the greatest German novel written since the end of World War II, The Tin Drum is the autobiography of thirty-year-old Oskar Matzerath who has lived through the long Nazi nightmare and who, as the novel begins, is being held in a mental institution. Willfully stunting his growth at three feet for many years, wielding his tin drum and piercing scream as anarchistic weapons, he provides a profound yet hilarious perspective on both German history and the human condition in the modern world.
