About This Item

London 1889 and 1891: David Nutt. Limited Edition. Thick Quarto. Two volumes in three limited to 108 signed and numbered copies. The present copy is number 27 signed by the publisher David Nutt. This is the original edition of William Caxton now reprinted and edited with an introduction and glossary by H. Oskar Sommer, and with an essay on Malory's prose style by Andrew Lang. Volumes one and two are the text volumes and volume three consists of studies on the sources and Andrew Lang's essay. x, [x1-xvi]424, 425-861 and xxv, 338pp. The editor, H. Oskar Sommers also bound in a note about the set. It is evident that this move was deaccessioned from a library noted by the small ink stamp to upper edges and apparently, the removal of a plate or pocket to rear pastedowns. In all regards, a handsome set bound by Mudie in 3/4 red morocco over red cloth, raised bands gilt with compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges marbled with matching marbled endpapers, the front inner hinge is cracked through the endpapers but quite stable. A clean bright set without foxing save for an occasional bit of spotting to volume three. From the library of Sir James Liege Hulett with his bookplate. He was a British sugar magnate, politician, and philanthropist. Very nice.
