Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and New York, 1911. 354 pages, 8vo. First Edition. Published June 1911. Dark green cloth boards with gilt lettering along spine. Illustrated from drawings made by the author in 1869 and from photographs by Herbert W. Gleason. The book itself is in excellent unmarked condition - The jacket (see photos) is very worn, fragile and in two pieces.
About the book: Considered one of the fathers of twentieth-century environmental activity, John Muir's appeal to modern readers is that he not only explored the American West but also fought for its preservation. My First Summer in the Sierra is Muir's account of his adventures and observations while working as a shepherd in the Yosemite Valley, which later became Yosemite National Park as a direct result of Muir's writings and activism. Muir's heartfelt and often humorous descriptions of his first summer spent in the Sierra Mountains.
