ca. 1935. Very Good. Printed bill, 35 x 50 cm. Blue ink on paper. Restored and laid down. The propaganda war against Francos forces in Spain was fought largely with posters. These were pasted up on walls in the night at great risk not only to those putting them up, but to the printers, artists, and organizers, too. The Socorro Rojo Internacional (S.R.I.), a creation of the Communist International Congress of 1922, was intended to function as a support and aid organization (providing soup kitchens, medical care, etc.) but also propagandized energetically. This poster declares War unto Death! To the provocateur, the spy, to anyone who sows discontent and fear. Lets end the Fifth Column. The little figure is composed of multiple eyes and antennae, keeping watch and listening. Such posters were willfully destroyed, and surviving examples are rare.

A few minor nicks and spots at the edges. Excellent, unused condition. A remarkable piece of early aviation ephemera, this calendar was produced as a Christmas greeting by the early female aviator Marguerite (Martie) Bowman (1901-1985) and her husband Leslie, also a pilot. It depicts Bowman flying in her WACO INF biplane, registration number NC625Y, in formation with two others, and includes portraits of Bowman, her husband, and their daughter Larnie Bowman Allen. We have learned from one of the Bowmans' grandchildren that Larnie joined the family profession, becoming a wing-walker at eight and soloing at twelve. Colton founded an American mapmaking company in the early 1830s which became an international leader in the map publishing industry until 1890. Colton created railroad maps, immigrant guides, elaborate atlases, and more all printed using engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than maps made with less costly wax engravings, which were often separately hand water colored. and were recognized for their decorative borders.
J.H. Colton's 'Western Tourist and Emigrant's Guide'is an important 19th-century geographical book with an enormous folding map of the American 'west' including Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Wisconsin. According to Howes, this work includes descriptions and material on California, Oregon, and Texas, with overland routes and westward expansion.

With eight full-page paper-weaving samples, each in two colors of paper (green, brown, pink, blue, black, white, etc.) Slight dampstaining to edges of wrappers. Contemporary ink ownership signature of a Mary Webb and date to front cover. Internally quite clean and attractive. A very good example of a fragile Froebel gift album. This is a colorful and well-executed example of Froebel gift fourteen. The techniques shown here include weaving in straight rows and columns, zigzags, and perpendicular designs, as well as attractive color-matching within the samples. The album also shows a difficulty progression from basic patterns to the more complicated designs.

In Good Condition: lacking about half of the leather over the spine; boards are rubbed; pages are lightly brown but clean and tight.

This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire.
