Hunting of the Snark Hardcover - 2002

by Lewis Carroll; Mervyn Peake (Illustrator)

Summary

If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p.4)

From the publisher

This new edition has been published to coincide with the dramatization of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy. Re-originated from his original artwork, it includes a selection of his remarkable working sketches.

Description:
London: Methuen & Co, 1999. 1st thus. h/b. Very good, 1st thus edition with Mervyn Peake illustrations. Clipped d/j (some browning on spine), maroon clothboards, silver spine titling bright; text block firm, pages unmarked. Donor's inscription on ffep. . 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). The Hunting of the Snark (An Agony in 8 Fits) is usually thought of as a nonsense poem written by Lewis Carroll in 1874, when he was already 42 years old and after the death of his godson had shattered his religious beliefs thoroughly. It actually is a fantastical epic tale recounting the adventures of a bizarre troupe of nine tradesmen and a beaver on their search for the Snark, a mysterious creature living in the seas.
