Some years prior to the Revolution, five brothers - William, Joseph, James, John, and Benjamin - came from Maryland and settled on the Tyger River in lower Spartanburg County. This history begins with excerpts from the minutes of the Wofford Memorial Association (1893-1914). Among those excerpts are historical sketches of the five brothers. Members of the Wofford family later migrated from Spartanburg County and are found in Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas. The Rev. Benjamin Wofford, son of Capt. Joseph and Martha Llewellyn Wofford, who left $100,000 in 1850 to found Wofford College commands considerable treatment throughout the book. The early years of the college are also discussed.
