Longshot Paperback - 2000

by Mark Ammerman; Mark Ammerman (Illustrator)

From the publisher

Carefully researched, these books are written with a heart for missions and au empathy for both the Native American and the white men in the colonization of America.Where Books 1 & 2 focused largely upon the gospel among the Indians of 17th century New England, Longshot leaps into the middle of the 18th century for a wide-angle look at colonial life and Christian missions just before the dark dawn of the French and Indian War. The Great Awakening has transformed the spiritual climate of the colonies from Massachusetts to Georgia, reviving churches and sweeping souls into the kingdom of God. Among the newly converted are many of the Indians of southern New England, including the Narragansett of Rhode Island (featured prominently in Books 1 and 2).Longshot is told in the first person by Christopher Long, an English surveyor and explorer who, with lifelong Narragansett friend Caleb Hobomucko, blazes a winding trail through the wilderness along the Ohio River in search of good ground for a new English settlement. They are joined on their journey by another Indian friend, an aged (but spunky and robust) Susquehannock hunter named Connie Joe. Longshot's pioneering and character are based closely upon the actual adventures (and journals) of an 18th century backwoodsman named Christopher Gist. Longshot at its roots is soaked in real history and the reader will absorb this past era quite naturally in the course of the narrative.
