About This Item

Various Publishers, Cologne: 1555 -1560., 1555 Three works bound in one. 1). pp. [353] Adams 2201; 2). ff. 63, [1]; 3). ff. 155. 24 mo. 120 mm. Attractive contemporary full leather binding over beveled oak boards. Leather worn smooth, though some the old armorial design can be made out. Unusual original twisted metal clasps. Gauphered gilt edges. The first of these works is by St. Augustine (354-430) an early Christian theologian and philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in north Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers in Western Christianity for his writings in the Patristic Era. Among his most important works are 'The City of God'; 'On Christian Doctrine' [included here]; and 'Confessions.' The second title is by St. Vincent of Lerins, who died ca. 445. He was a Gallic monk and author of important early Christian writings. He was probably a proponent of semipelagianism and opposed the Augustine model of grace. The third is by Arnoldus Vesaliensis (Arnold Haldrein), (1484-1534). He was a German Humanist. Here he is joined with Peter Lombard (1096-1160), a scholastic theologian, Bishop of Paris, and author of Four Books of Sentences, which became the standard textbook of theology. Each of these editions are very scarce, and there are only a handful of examples in libraries worldwide. A treasured collection in a wonderful contemporary binding. RARE. CHEST 2/1. Hardcover. Very Good.
