About This Item

Amsterdam., c.1700. A beautiful set of the four continents. Each map shows, in excellent detail, the extent of the exploration of the world up around the year 1700. Each map has separate decorated cartouches for the title and the scales. The map of the Americas, a map closely aligned with the Jaillot map of 1674, has two excellent vignettes in each lower corner, each depicting encounters between Europeans and Native Americans. California is shown as an island. The map of Africa has a set of wonderful cartouches, one featuring "exotic" wild African animals. Set of four maps. Size: 585 x 500 mm. Mounted size: 730 x 630 mm. Copper engraving. Original colour. Fine condition. Crisp and clean impressions. Map of Europe has some browning.
