He was son of Johan Rantzau. He was Governor of the Danish royal share in the Duchy of Holstein, a rich man and celebrated book collector. Rantzau is perhaps best remembered as a patron of scholars. His own Tractatus astrologicus de genethliacorum thematum appeared in 1597, and went through five editions by 1615. Governor of Holstein, a wealthy bibliophile, according to his 16th-century chronicler, Rantzau's library and treasury contained 6,300 books, charts, globes, clocks and astronomical instruments. Contains detailed explanations of the basics of calendar calculation (beginning of the year, seasons, computus) according to the Julian and Gregorian calendars (pp. 205-300), numerous astrological chapters (pp. 435-530), which initially deal with the general, basic topics deal with (division of the zodiac, houses, five methods of house division, nature and properties of the seven planets and lunar nodes, zodiac dignity of the planets) Provenance: with handwritten ownership entries by Johan Henri Gotman 1668 and Georg Hannaeus 1681.
