BACKGROUND:
•John Speed (1551 or 1552 – 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is the best known English mapmaker of the Stuart period.

•In creating this exceptional work—"incomparably more complete than all the histories of his predecessors put together" (Lowndes, 2471)—Speed was responding to "the need of the country to fix its place in the world, to contemplate, simultaneously, its past and present" (Schama II:10). Speed's Historie vividly tells of such monarchs as William the Conqueror, Edward the Confessor, Henry II ("the founder of the English common law"), Richard the Lionhearted, Edward I ("the greatest of the Plantagenets"), Henry V (who against great odds, "conquered an empire") and the monarch whose rule "came to embody a truly national consciousness," Elizabeth I (Kings & Queens, 52, 79, 120, 198). "The first of English historians as distinguished from chroniclers and annalists," Speed also offers dramatic "accounts of the important naval engagements of early England, a mention of the discovery of America by Columbus, passages on the voyages of Drake and Frobischer, and detailed descriptions of the defeat of the Spanish Armada and the expedition to Lisbon" (Rosenbach 19:728).

CONDITION:
•Condition is Good+/Very Good. New rebinding/end pages, lacking initial blank, repair to upper corners of title page/dedication page/no loss of text, faint intermittent damp staining to upper corners of some pages in beginning/middle, most pages are very good, insect tract/hole to bottom margin near gutter of last 100 pages or so, few errors in pagination/publisher's error/complete, hinges/text block are very good/excellent!
•The Historie being the second work and the contents listing refers to the first four books which were part of the Theatre, although this work (books 5 - 10) is complete in itself.

Description:
London: George Sawbridge, 1674 pp (22) + 107 + 183-429 . In addition to the frontispiece there are five folding plates. This copy is complete despite the jump in pagination after page 107 ; it corresponds with that in the British Library. Internally very good subject to moderate browning, some fraying to the fep and fairly inoffensive evidence of moisture to the edges of the first few leaves. Hinges cracked although binding still holding. Cover, which looks to be contemporary, rather worn. The boards scuffed with wear to the edges and corners. The ornate spine has significant wear to both extremities. Scans available.

Description:
LONDON: J Wilcox , 1732 First edition of Coker's Survey of Dorsetshire - with the original county map and 6 copper plates of Arms as called for. Stated to have been written originally by Thomas Gerrard in the 1620's and then first published by Coker in 1732. In contemporary full leather binding with newer spine with gilt titles. With title page; dedication 1p; folding map of Dorsetshire; text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals 128pp; Names of Persons/plate listing 4pp; 6 plates of Arms; Index 16pp; blank. The original leather boards have wear to corners and the newer spine (which is of poorer quality leather) has fraying at the top and bottom and some wear along the spine joints - particularly the front joint. The contents are very clean and in good order with just the occasional mark. The map has a crease from poor folding but is complete and clean. The endpapers have some marking and the front endpaper has not been repaired along the joint when the new spine was added.

London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Description:
London : J Streater, for Henry Twiford, George Sawbridge, Thomas Dring, and John Place, 1657 A very good copy of Londinopolis in full leather binding. James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn. This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine. It is showing some wear to the front hinge and edges and has a small scuff but is… Read More
