About This Item

Long Island, New York. 1766. 3 pages. Folio. 12½ x 8 inches. String tied with paper wafer and wax seal. Horizontal tear at center of each page expertly reinforced with tissue paper.

An eighteenth century manuscript, a contemporary copy of the probated will of Rulef Deryea (c.1738-1766) which was dated February 8, 1763 and then proved December 10, 1766. Deryea (or Duryee) was a mariner. He was baptised at Reformed Dutch Church, New Utrecht, Kings Co., Long Island, New York.

Deryea's will notes the name of his brother, John Deryea of Long Island and his Uncle Derrick Deryea (c.1712-1786) -both to whom he leaves all of his estate of money and goods. Witnessed by B. Underhill, Peter Demelt (Demett ?), Charles Kneffian, and noting the name of lawyer John French. All of the "signatures" were copied out by the law clerk who neatly copied out this 18th-century legal document.
