Good. John Ogilby (1600 - 1676). 17th Century Copper-engraved Strip-style Map. The Road from St Davids com Pembroke to Holywell com Flint. 35.5 by 45 cm (14 x17.75 inches)
As the road winds through the Welsh hills and along the coast, the towns of St Davids, Fishguard, Newport, Cardigan and Port Talbot are encountered along the way.
Features: Shows rivers with named bridges, the sea when it is near the route, hills (represented upside down when the road goes down them). Towns and other settlements passed through are shown, and churches are marked and distinguished by tower or spire. County boundaries are shown, and the distance from the outset is written along the route. Some darkening in margins with small chips and tears; very good. Background Information:
John Ogilby (1600 - 1676) was the first cartographer to make use of strip-maps for roads. A Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions.
In his 2008 television series Terry Jones claimed that one of the map's purposes was to facilitate a Catholic takeover of the kingdom, an interpretation that one historian agreed was 'significant and highly plausible'. Ref. JICS archive; wiki

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Description:
1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will receive.

Redlands, California: Pure Gold, [1955]. Stapled wraps. Very good. [12p.] Small chips to wrap edges. The Mutual Orange Distributors (MOD) was founded in Redlands, California, in 1906 as a cooperative marketing association representing citrus growers in California. Within a few years, the coop included citrus growers in western Arizona. In 1955, MOD changed its name to Pure Gold, originally the brand name for fruit grown by the approximately 2,500 MOD growers. Sunkist took over the Pure Gold trademark when the co-op closed in 1987 due to housing developments replacing the citrus fields and the shrinking number of packing plants. This booklet explains the history of the citrus-growing culture in California and Arizona and provides information on the variety of oranges, lemons, and grapefruit grown and their cultivation and packaging. A map on the back shows the regions represented by the Pure Gold cooperative. Scarce, none located in OCLC. B&w illustrations and halftone photographs. (11"x8-1/2")

On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Thomas Hastings who came from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634.[1] Adams received his early training in the Amherst, Massachusetts public schools and Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Amherst College in 1872. In 1873 Adams traveled to Europe to study and write. In 1874 he then moved to Heidelberg, Germany to pursue the Ph.D. degree. There he was influenced by Johann Gustav Droysen and Johann Kaspar Bluntschli, the latter also becoming his mentor. Heidelberg did not then require a thesis from its doctoral candidates, instead it required an oral examination, for which he chose political science for his major field (Hauptfach), with two minors… Read More

Description:
[no place, but Cleveland, OH], 1959. Staplebound. Very good. Octavo, 4pp. Side-stapled with decorative ribbon added. Mimeographed cover and contents. Very good, with some creasing to covers. There is pen and pencil writing internally, and with the numerous corrections to dates and times, we presume that this program was used to draft the program for the coming season; that is, the corrections to dates, times, sponsors, and the league officers are indicated so that the new season's program will be updated. We could find no information about the "Queen Pin League," but it clearly seems to have been an all-women bowling league in the Cleveland area (with all Cleveland city businesses as sponsors). A light pencil drawing on the rear cover might be a mock-up for a new cover design. Highly ephemeral piece of Cleveland women's bowling history.
