At first a Sergeant, he later became 1st Lieutenant and belonged to Co. A, 28th Wisconsin Infantry. Still later he was Adjutant of the 39 Wisconsin Infantry. Brigadier General Charles King served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895.
