About This Item

Moses, John. The author argues that the existing constitution of the State of Illinois, first adopted in 1847, has served the State well, leading to an unprecedented period of prosperity while the new proposed constitution is a travesty of "tax schemes... confusions, nuisances, conflicts [and] corruption," among its other faults, such as the proposal to add an additional 214 state offices. This proposed constitution was rejected by the voters at the ballot box. Moses concludes by appealing to the average Illinoisan during the Civil War: "Are we likely to be benefitted by discarding our old Constitution and adopting the work of seventy-five men, elected while the public mind was absorbed in the raising of regiments for the maintenance of the Union, and holding their sessions, as it were, in the midst of battle sand sieges? Every fair-minded citizen must answer NO." The Newberry Library suggests the author was John Moses (1825-1898), a former Judge and State representative. Scarce. None found at auction for over fifty years, only one noted for sale, in 1937 by Eberstadt, and only three located cited on OCLC as of September 2023: Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Newberry Library, and Western Reserve Historical Society Library. Upper half of the binding beginning to separate, 3/4 inch tear along top edge, mild toning and spotting throughout; overall, in good condition.
