Full maroon Leather,with leather inside front and back cover.  Gold gilt lettering on the spine and gold gilt illustration on the front. The letters of Confederate Captain John J. Good who commanded a battery of Texas artillery. The only Texas artillery unit to serve East of the Mississippi in many battles. Organized in 1861 with 50 men each from Dallas & Tyler.209 pp.

The books were one of the items sold at annual bazaars that were major fundraisers for the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, This volume contains writings by William Lloyd Garrison, John Quincy Adams, Edmund Quincy, James Russell Lowell, Maria Lowell, Edmund Jackson, Wendell Phillips, David Lee Child, Joseph Mazzini, and many others. Minor wear and light soiling, mainly to outer wrappers; small circular "New-York Historical Society" inkstamp dated 23 May 1864 at upper left corner of front wrapper. First edition. Illinois' Civil War governor calls a special session of the legislature in order to enact emergency war preparedness measures. After reviewing the traitorous actions of the "disloyal States" and the Union's "clearly and unmistakably in self-defense" response, Yates beseeches the legislature for sweeping reform, "the enactment of a practicable militia law." This he elaborates in detail. "Let us so act," he concludes dramatically, "that our children and our children's children, when we are laid in the dust, will hold us in grateful remembrance, as we do now bless the heroes and patriots who achieved our independence, and transmitted to us the priceless heritage of American liberty." At first a Sergeant, he later became 1st Lieutenant and belonged to Co. A, 28th Wisconsin Infantry. Still later he was Adjutant of the 39 Wisconsin Infantry. Brigadier General Charles King served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895.
