About This Item

[Early Hot Air Ballooning] [Science] Mansfield, Charles Blachford. Aerial Navigation. London: MacMillan & Co., 1877. First edition. xxiii, [1], 513 pages. A3 is a second title leaf, entitled "Aerial Navigation- The Problem with Hints for its Solution by Ithi Kefalende". A beautiful copy, rebound in a handsome modern period style brown half-calf with marbled boards and maroon spine label with gilt ruling. Mansfield was known primarily for his work as the chemist who developed a process for extracting benzol from coal-tar as well. He was also well renown for the publication of 'Theory of Salts', considered his most important contribution to theoretical chemistry. Mansfield's scientific prowess is notable in this work as he devotes much consideration to motive and powered aerial navigation. Lighter-than-air aircraft efforts of the time were subject to the whims of nature and had been since Montgolfier. This publication was written in the early 1850s but issued posthumously as Mansfield died prematurely at 36 in a laboratory accident. An attractive copy overall in very good condition.
