About This Item

Tipografia Sociale Monzese, 1923. Softcover. Very Good. Early-century Manza, Italy commission report on the colors and design of the municipal flag. Explanatory text and four tipped-in colorful plates: existing flag, proposed flag, coat of arms and city herald costume. (See photos.) Both the existing and proposed flags feature the Moon of Monza, an ancient symbol. Explanation of the symbolic meaning according to the fourteenth-century Monzaese chronicler Bonincontro Morigia: "And yet, since the authorities of the Pope and the Emperor exist in Monza, these gave the aforementioned Land of Monza noble and symbolic insignia to be taken by the Municipality, and that is a flag of white field having a red moon in the middle, and this to mean that, as in the world there are two luminaries that preside one a day, the other at night, and that is the Sun and the Moon, so in the world two Lords must preside over spiritual things, the other over temporal things, namely the Pope at first, the Emperor at the latter." Rare. Bound in gray wrappers with rubricated title, rulings and decorative elements to front panel. Text in Italian. 25 pp. 12 1/2" x 8 3/8". Light edge wrinkling to wrappers and small closed tear to joint of front panel. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
