Fourteen contestants were invited to participate in the 29th United States Chess Championship played in Greenville, Pennsylvania July 14 through August 1, 1983. It became a tightly contested with three players sharing first place with scores of 9/14. These contestants were Larry Christiansen, Walter Browne and Roman Dzindzichashvili. In sole third was Nick de Firmian a full point behind. A point behind him was Joel Benjamin and Dmitry Gurevich sharing fifth through sixth. Andy Soltis was sole holder of seventh place with a scored of 6.5. Closely followed by him a half point behind was a tie with Lev Alburt and Anatoly Lein. Jay Whitehead was tenth with 5.5. Sergey Kudrin and Kamran Shiraz shared eleventh and twelfth with 5 points each. A point behind them sharing the last two places were James Tarjan and Boris Kogan.

Signed on the half title. Spine sunned, light edge wear, lightly soiled else a very good copy.
