About This Item

Josiah W. Leeds, Philadelphia, PA, 1901; 12 mo (3 3/4" x 6"), 8 pages; printed paper wraps. Self-published pamphlet by notable Quaker author and peace activist Josiah W. Leeds (1841-1908) advocating the abolishment of the death penalty and citing, in support of his thesis, a formal debate which had some years earlier taken place in a council of Society Islanders convoked to consider the same topic, recorded by Daniel Tyerman and George Bennet during their historic voyages to the South Sea Islands, 1821-1829. Introductory remarks and background by the author. Fine condition, previous owner cursive signature in the top margin of the front wrap. An original booklet, not a reprint.
