He became the first person to ride a bicycle entirely around the world, leaving San Francisco on a large-wheeled ordinary, or penny-farthing, in April 1884 and arriving in Boston in August of that year. After spending the winter in New York City, he took a steamer to Liverpool, beginning the next leg of his journey from there in May 1885. After many adventures, he reached Yokohama in Dec. 1886 and returned to San Francisco by steamer in Jan. 1887. His account of the trip first appeared in English as Around the World on a Bicycle, which was translated into German and published in 1889. Book is in Near Fine Condition: page edges slightly soiled; otherwise, clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Good+ Condition: spine is sunned; minor loss at upper edge of front section; several closed tear from edges of 2 cm. or less; lightly soiled.
