Alfred E. Johann graduated grammar school, in the First World War was a volunteer and then Freikorps member . In Berlin, he studied theology, geography and sociology. After an apprenticeship at the Prussian State Bank he was carrying and auditors, but gave up his job in 1927.

As an agricultural worker, he emigrated to Canada. From there Wollschläger first trip reports sent to the Vossische newspaper . Now the travel writing was his purpose in life. He traveled preferred by public transport and therefore got to know country and people very well. Courage and ingenuity characterize both its own travel as well as the books he wrote about it.

AE Johann , as he now called himself, traveled the world. He was in China, Japan, Australia and America. 1938 to 1939 he crossed the African continent. During the Second World War he was involved in the high command of the army because of his extensive knowledge with special functions. His success continued even after the end of World War II in addition. 1955/56, he traveled to Africa again. His avowed favorite travel destination was Canada .

In addition to the travel descriptions AE Johann wrote several novels, mostly playing in distant countries and also worked as a translator. In 1969 he received the Prize of the Marienburg Landsmannschaft West Prussia .
