Octavo, 290pp. Three-quarter morocco, gilt ruled borders. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine. Matching marbled paper boards and marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. The first English edition, published by John Murray in London. Solid text block, light wear to hinges and rubbing to corners. Faint foxing along edges of leaves. A bright, near fine example. BAL State B with advertisement imprint, no priority established. Includes additional plates and illustrations affixed to blank leaves throughout text. Frontispiece portrait of Irving opposite title page. (BAL 10141). This English edition preceded the first American edition, published in the same year, and often confused with the true first issue.
