A very handsome true first edition copy in Near Fine condition, title page little loose, small bumps to the marbled boards and spine ends, otherwise in Fine condition, nice contemporary bookplate and later name inscription on front board. Overall this scarce copy presents a most outstanding collectible of this fundamental work in science; The fundamental work of Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855) , ranked with Archimedes and Newton as the greatest of Mathematicians, in defining the method of least squares, the procedure used to this day to minimize the impact of measurement error. The first compository of Gauss' individual documentation (originally published in 1809) into a separate, comprehensive volume on the subject in the original German language, translated from Latin; 8vo; 208 pages .
