The binding is very worn, and the spine has perished, exposing the gatherings and stitching. The wooden boards are chipped, especially at the fore edges and along the bottom of the front cover. Much of the paper on the rear board is peeled or chipped off. The binding is still holding. Untrimmed. Complete with the copperplate engraved frontis and the footnote at page 77. Some foxing to the text. The title page and frontis are especially foxed and soiled. Early signature at the top edge of the front flyleaf appears to read "N. Pike," but there is some chipping right along the top edge at the signature. Rare.

Complete with 120 engraved plates, plus 1 map. The binding measures 11 1/8 inches tall by just over 9 inches wide. Hardcover bound in original 3/4 black leather with dark brown cloth-covered boards. The binding is rubbed and bumped, and the hinges are especially rubbed but holding. Corners bumped and abraded. Some old stains and scuffs to the binding. A sound copy. A yellow bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown reads "Applegate, Pounsford & Co. / (Successors to Applegate & Co.) / Publisher's, Booksellers / Stationers, Printers / and Blank Book Manufacturers, No. 43, Main Street. - - Cincinnati." Hardcover bound in original burgundy cloth. Now housed in a clear mylar jacket. The binding of the book has moderate rubbing and wear. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Text is a bit toned. A couple of pages have handwritten notations in the margins, presumably by Samuel A. Ashe. The notations are on pages pertaining to the Ashe family. Laid in loosely in a plastic sleeve is typed letter from publisher A. B. Caldwell to Capt. S. A. Ashe of Raleigh, North Carolina. The letter is on Caldwell Publishing Company letterhead and is on cheap paper that has several tears and crease. Hardcovers in burgundy cloth, with title in gilt on front covers and spines. All volumes have moderate wear, including some heavy spotting (foxing) and rubbing. Some corners are bumped, some fore-edges are bumped. There is a dent in the spine (on the title) on Volume VI. All edges of text blocks are foxed, and the text has sporadic foxing. Interior is a bit musty. A sound set. Set includes the original receipt from Blackwell's in England, circa 1966.

Hardcovers nicely re-bound in 20th Century 3/4 red morocco with marbled paper covered boards. Five raised spine bands. Bindings are in very nice condition, showing only light wear. New endpapers. This the illustrated edition. Dated 1886 on the copyright page of each volume. Text is a little toned but generally clean. A few award cards from the early 20th century have been placed loosely within a couple of the volumes. An exceptional set with great shelf appeal.

Each volume is dated 1838 and is stated "Seconde Edition." Hardcovers bound in three-quarter leather with marbled paper-covered boards. All volumes rebacked with modern lighter brown leather (the original leather has chipping on the boards near the spines, but with the rebacks the bindings are sturdy and can withstand confident use). Each spine has a red leather title label and a small green leather Volume number label. There is moderate wear to the bindings, which is abraded in places. Rubbing and scuffing to the boards. Spines are sound and hinges are secure. The outer edge of the text block is speckled.
