About This Item
London: J. Pote et al, 1785. Second Edition. Full leather. Fair. Unpaginated. 22 cm. Full leather with gold impressing and burgundy spine label. Front board and endpapers detached, chipped spine ends, worn corners. Book plate for Lord Walsingham on front pastedown.
Robert Ainsworth was master of 'a considerable boarding-school' but acquired a moderate fortune and gave it up. About 1714, a proposal was made to some of the leading London booksellers to compete a new English and Latin Dictionary. Ainsworth was engaged to carry out the work but needed assistance due to his advanced age and an eye disorder. Nevertheless, the first edition appeared in 1736 and long remained the best Latin-English Dictionary. Thomas Morell was a classical scholar and librettist.
